Detailed Simulation of Complex Networks with the
RAILSIM Network Simulator

RAILSIM Network Simulator models complex rail networks, such as this application of proposed commuter rail service on the CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Trains and the track circuits they occupy are shown in green, and the train ID's are shown in red. The proposed Multimodal Terminal is shown in the center of the above image.

As you zoom in on a particular area, RAILSIM Network Simulator shows additional details such as dynamic display of signal aspects during run time. Graphical zooming and panning, including automated tracking of user-selected trains, are all supported. The image below shows the dynamic simulation of Howell and Spring Interlockings. Note that proposed Commuter Train 8C1 is approaching diverging signal aspects for its route to the proposed Multimodal Terminal.

Full detail of the simulation is provided as it occurs; in addition to changing signal aspects, trains progress along the track, and train display colors can change (when defined) to indicate varying degrees of schedule adherence (for several early, on-time, and late selections). Extensive analytical information can be obtained during a simulation; for example, a train, station, or interlocking can be examined, or a train can be followed as it moves through its simulated run. More detailed analysis of a simulation can be performed using RAILSIM Report Generator, which provides text and graphic output.
